The Drupal book market is flourishing, particularly from the Packt Publishing House. Some of the books appear to be searching for a readership, and their potential target market somewhat limited. Drupal Multimedia is one such example. In a nutshell, the book primarily walks through the installation and configuration of a collection of standard Drupal modules. Now there's nothing wrong with that per se, and indeed many other books are doing the same thing, but much of what is being said is familiar territory to most Drupal-ers, and most is also extremely rudimentary.

The book takes the first 40 pages to provide an overview of Drupal's building blocks, modules such as Views and CCK, and some theming. Chapter 2 sees the creation of an image gallery whilst chapter 3 introduces the ImageCache module for resizing and cropping pictures before output. More advanced topics are covered in subsequent chapters such as rollover menu items using CSS, Lightbox for displaying zoomed images, watermarks and slideshows.

If you've ever wanted to embed youtube videos in your website, then the process for achieving this is detailed in chapter 5, whilst local video capture can be streamed following the instructions in chapter 6. Audio is covered in chapters 8 and 9, and theming clips discussed in chapter 10.

It is difficult to see this release being all that popular with its niche subject matter. On top of this, it's difficult to envisage precisely who would be in the target readership. A seasoned Drupal pro would have no use for this book, whilst a beginner would be unable to follow all the concepts discussed. At best I can see it appealing to a Manager compiling requirements documents for potential websites - by skimming this book an appreciation of what can be achieved using Drupal Multimedia can be gained. Beyond that, I suspect its usefulness is limited.
