Good Food Chilli Beef with Black Beans and Avocado Salad
Last edited on: 25/01/2014 - 10:42

I'm always on the look out for new chilli recipes, and the Holy Grail is to uncover one which doesn't contain beans - apparently that's the traditional Mexican way of making chilli. Well this one does contain beans, but not kidney. A whole two cans of black beans (now available from most large Tesco branches) are required if you are making this directly from the printed recipe.

Good Food Chicken Curry with Lime Leaf, Lemongrass and Mango

My first review of 2014 and I wanted something interesting that would be slightly more challenging than my mainstays. The BBC Good Food magazine January 2014 issue has a wonderful chicken curry with lime leaf, lemongrass and mango giving it a 'totally tropical taste'! The recipe requires the curry paste to be constructed from scratch - hence my desire to select a more complex dish.

Easy Cook Pad Thai with Prawns

In theory this recipe from BBC Easy Cook magazine December 2013 (itself lifted from BBC Good Food September 2012) should have been the perfect fillip for an over-indulged white meat overloaded Christmas. The reality sadly never quite lived up to the expectation. The recipe is simplicity itself, and most cooks would have all the ingredients to hand. These days it isn't difficult to source 'exotic' ingredients like tamarind paste which for instance can be bought from Waitrose branches.

Easy Thai Red Chicken Curry

It's always a good idea to have a repertoire of quick and easy yet tasty midweek recipes in your locker ready to roll out at a moment's notice. This recipe taken from the Tesco website certainly fits the bill. All the ingredients should be readily available in any decently stocked kitchen, although perhaps the chicken and the fresh pepper may require a journey to the nearest corner shop.

The recipe only merits a desultory three stars on the Tesco website but it is certainly worth more than that. I enjoyed it immensely and would recommend for those with little time.

Good Food Turkey and Potato Curry
Last edited on: 28/12/2013 - 12:20

By the 27th of December it can be assumed I will be tired of eating turkey, despite there being copious amounts of it left. It therefore made sense to chose a recipe that would bring a new dimension to the meat (which was lovely and succulent by the way) and thus BBC Good Food December 2013 issue provided the inspiration with its Turkey and Potato Curry.

Crab and Avocado Salad with Japanese Dressing
Last edited on: 28/12/2013 - 11:42

Traditionally I have had smoked salmon or prawn cocktail for my Christmas lunch appetiser. However this year I was looking for something a little more creative. Nigella's Crab and Avocado salad with Japanese Dressing looked the perfect candidate, and I was drawn to the fact the recipe is extraordinarily easy - a blessing when trying to create the perfect main course.

Panettone French Toast with Mixed Berries
Last edited on: 25/12/2013 - 13:03

After being given a panettone by a very dear Italian friend I wondered if there was something creative I could use it for, and with the Christmas festivities looming, a tie in with the season looked promising.

A Google search unearthed Panettone French Toast with Mixed Berries. This looked like the ideal Xmas day breakfast and thus it proved. However, for a Christmas morning preparation, it was a little fiddly. Cream needed whipping, berries needed pulping and the bread needed soaking in a batter. In the end I believe it was worth the effort.

Good Food Spotty Pudsey Cake

BBC Good Food magazine November 2013 contains Emily Kydd's recipe for a Children In Need charity cake; the intention being to bake the cake and sell slices to friends and colleagues and donate the proceeds to the charity. This gave me an idea - why not make two cakes, and therefore double the money? Well, that could be some feat - the cakes would have to be more than just edible, they would have to be decorated to the same standards as the photographed example in the magazine. Tall order!!

Good Food Rich Chicken and Walnut Stew
Last edited on: 11/11/2013 - 11:15

It's not every day I make myself Persian stew. In fact, I would imagine this is my first ever attempt, and whilst it was quite a tasty offering, it will probably be my last for a period of time. The recipe, from BBC Good Food November 2013 issue, is based heavily on walnuts and pomegranate molasses. Once the onion and the chicken is added, there is nothing else to it. I can't help but feel it deserves a little more.

Good Food Steak with Peppercorn Sauce
Last edited on: 10/11/2013 - 21:51

Steak, peas and French fries with peppercorn sauce. That has to go down as one of the all time greats. A meal that would excite even the most jaded palette whilst propelling them back through a 970s time warp so prawn cocktail and scampi and chips could be sampled at the same time.

Since I'm trying to cut back on my red meat intake, steak has been elevated to treat status and must not be consumed more than once every few months. All the more reason therefore to dive into BBC Good Food November 2013's Steak with Peppercorn Sauce recipe. That day every two or three months is upon us.
