Good Food Salted Honey Fudge and Chocolate Tart
Last edited on: 10/11/2013 - 21:20

What's this? Salted Honey Fudge and Chocolate Tart? What's not to like? On the face of it nothing, and that was the compelling reason to take on BBC Good Food October 2013 magazine's recipe. Sadly, the reality did not match the dream, and there was plenty to dislike in this recipe. A recipe which was either compiled by people incapable of understanding averagely talented (at best) cooks like me would not be able to make it; or alternatively that aforementioned averagely talented cook is in fact totally bereft of talent and considerably under average.

Good Food Sticky Seeded Salmon with Satsuma Salad

Yet another review of a recipe from November 2013's BBC Good Food magazine - here we have Sticky Seeded Salmon with Satsuma Salad, and it is so ridiculously easy and tasty it's fiendish! There is practically no effort required in assembling this dish (I can barely call it cooking) and for once the magazine's timings look if anything rather generous. I would agree with the 15 minutes for cooking the salmon, but it doesn't take 10 minutes for the preparation unless they are bundling in time for the oven to warm up!

Good Food Lamb Kofta Tagine

Another recipe from the excellent BBC Good Food publication, this time November 2013's Lamb Kofta Tagine. I've always been a fan of lamb mince - an affordable way of eating lamb which by and large I consider most cuts too expensive to buy. The recipe is easy to make, although it took me a couple of attempts to roll out the kofta balls to the correct size. The magazine suggests 'walnut' size balls which I clearly misinterpreted as 'golf ball size'. By re-rolling the meat to the correct size, I doubled the quantity!

Good Food Asian Caramel Chicken Wings
Last edited on: 09/11/2013 - 12:25

BBC Good Food magazine November 2013 issue contains a wonderful recipe for Asian Caramel Chicken Wings. I suspect strongly that the dish doesn't represent a balanced intake of one's daily vitamins, but as an occasional treat there can't be much harm.

Question marks arise as to whether the dish would be sufficient for four hungry adults as printed in the magazine, and certainly as a main course it wouldn't. But as part of a platter of finger food for watching the footie - perfect!

Good Food Thai Chicken and Cashew Stir-Fry with Charred Limes

There's no doubt about it, James Martin is one of the pre-eminent and talented TV chefs gracing the airwaves. I'm not keen on his stumbling delivery and there are undertones of a somewhat prehistoric Yorkshire attitude to his work, but there's no denying he is a very skilled practitioner. When he commits a recipe to the BBC Good Food magazine, then one has to take notice.

Zombie Cupcakes - Zombie Moon

I spotted Zilly Rosen's Zombie Cupcakes book remaindered in one of those high street 'pile em high, sell em cheap' type joints a couple of years back for pennies, and vowed to attempt some of her wonderful creations. I was well aware that all the cookery and the illustrations had been prepared by experts so when I set out to create the Zombie Moon cupcakes I knew somehow my cakes weren't going to quite measure up to those in this glossy little book.

Good Food Apple and Toffee Crumble Tart

This is no ordinary apple crumble. In fact it is no ordinary apple and toffee crumble - the recipe hails from two Michelin stars pub chef Tom Kerridge and was featured in the October issue of BBC Good Food magazine, itself a reproduction of the same recipe taken from Tom Kerridge's Proper Pub Food book.

Good Food Spanish Chicken

At last a recipe comes along giving me an opportunity to road test my new anodised sauté pan! The magazine suggested that the end to end time would be 45 minutes although this once again proved to be wildly optimistic and it took me about 55 minutes. The chicken thighs needed to be coated with flour and paprika and seasoning which was a little messy, and then the vegetables prepared.

Good Food Thai Coconut Soup with Turkey Meatballs

This Thai Coconut Soup with Turkey Meatballs recipe is effectively a Thai Red Curry, since it utilises Thai red curry paste and coconut milk - the two main constituents for a red curry. It's a winning combination and has the advantage of being very quick to put together - I would say a further 5 minutes above the printed 10 mins prep time resulting in an acceptable 15 mins, and then another 15 minutes to cook.

Good Food Sausage and Lentil Traybake
Last edited on: 13/10/2013 - 16:56

An unusual dish here - sausage and lentil traybake, and not one I would normally consider and yet it certainly worked and was very enjoyable. Lentils are indelibly etched in my psyche as the food consumed in vast quantities by Neil the student in the TV sitcom 'The Young Ones', and as such they are a food stuff I by and large avoid. The purchase of ready cooked Puy lentils was a first for me but won't be the last.
